  • EU VAT rates and rules

After spending an hour searching various sites for links to the new e-commerce VAT rules in the EU etc., I stumble across this new(ish) feature on the europa.eu website.

It basically gives you an overview of the EU VAT information listed below and links to similar VAT information at a national level (for most EU countries). You just need to select the EU country you are interested in and voila… you get all this type of information:

    • When is VAT charged?
    • VAT rules at national level
    • File a VAT return online
    • VAT rates
    • VAT rates applied in EU member countries
    • Standard VAT rates
    • Reduced VAT rates
    • Special rates…

Anyway… I thought I would share this as my first post to the forum. Feel free to share any other useful EU VAT information to this discussion. Although I am an account based in New Zealand, there is not a week that goes by without needing to refer to some elements of EU VAT.

You will also be happy to hear that the European Commission has just published its VAT rate guide on the VAT rates (i.e. standard rates, reduced rates and zero-rates) in force in all Member States of the European Union, as at 1 January 2020.

There is also a database on the ec.europa.eu website where you can quickly search for the VAT rate of specific goods and services by EU Member States (in multiple languages). It also allows you to search by the CN code for goods and by the CPA code for services. This saves so much time compared to having to  scroll through large PDFs!
